BACKGROUND
When the British entered Peking for the first time, they
found the Empress Tzu'Hai dead on the floor of her palace
in the Forbidden City.
Her body was guarded by five Pekingese dogs.
The Empress had committed suicide because China was being
invaded by Westerners.
Some of her servants and eunuchs had also killed themselves,
while others had fled to the hills, taking with them the sacred
little Pekingese dogs which had never been seen before outside the walls of the Forbidden City.
During the centuries in which the eunuchs had bred the
Pekingese for the Emperors, the breed remained
cloistered in the Forbidden City at the Summer Palace.
The penalty for anyone found witch a dog outside these
places was death.
The pedigree of the dogs were kept by Court painters who
recorded the exact size, colouring and likeness of a favoured dog on a
screen. In return for their privileged
position at court, the dainty pekes were passionately
devoted to their owners. That is why the five faithful dogs
stood by the body of the fallen Empress.
Perhaps it was the same five dogs which were send back to England as the
first of many exotic arrivals from the
Orient. One was given to Queen Victoria; the others went to English Nobles
who bred from them and showed the first Pekingese at an English show in
1904.
Today breeders still stick closely to the description of the dog
whimsically set out by the Empress Tzu'Hai in her famous poem, pearls of
the Pekingese.
