INTRODUCTION
There has long been a need for a
comprehensive booklet on the Australian Terrier. The Australian Terrier
Club of
N.S.W. has
decided to fill this gap with information for Australian Terrier fanciers
who wish to learn more about the History, Care and Management of the
breed. This booklet is the first of a number to be brought out on this
subject.
It seems that everyone
at some time, some place has come across an "Aussie". Maybe you owned one
as a child and remember the relationship between this special breed and
children - or perhaps you can remember one living in your neighborhood.
Wherever you met up with one, an Australian Terrier is quite unforgettable
and carries many happy memories.
Small in stature, but
with the heart of a lion, an Australian Terrier will protect you-and your
possessions from harm. Bred with a wonderful sense
Of hearing, he makes
the ideal watchdog, although rarely barks without good cause. The
"Aussie" is a versatile dog, being equally at home in a. small suburban
backyard or on vast acreage.
With good care he can live to a ripe old
age, being robust and vigorous by nature. An Australian Terrier has all
the strength of the mongrel with all the prestige of the pure-bred dog.
Once an "aussie"
owner - always
an "Aussie' owner -
he is that sort of
dog: Australia's Terrier is the ultimate in dog ownership.
This booklet is
dedicated to our National Terrier - the wonderful, the unique Australian
Terrier who brings joy and pleasure to
all of us fortunate enough to be owned by one.

THE FORMATION OF THE AUSTRALIAN TERRIER
CLUB OF N.S.W.
This Club commenced in 1957 with a small advertisement placein "The
Sydney Morning Herald" by Mr.Mrs.Fitz-Gibbon of "Artel" Kennels.
This advertisement invited all interested parties to meet and discuss the
formation of a Club.
In addition to Mr:and Mrs.Fitz-Gibbon, the following people were present
at that historic August. 1957 meeting: Mrs.J.Vignes, Mrs.0.Smith, Mrs.J.M.
Edworthy, Mrs.E.Davies, Miss E.F. Williams, Miss E.J.Williams, Mrs.J.
Heywood, Mrs.Burchell, Mr.Rosewell and Mr.and Mrs.Cliff.
As R.A.S.K.C. regulations decreed that at least
twenty members should form a Club, a recruiting drive was instituted at
All-Breeds shows held around that time.
Acting with drive and determination, this goal was easily reached by the
time the inaugural meeting was held on the 13th September,1957: Sixteen
people turned up at the Railway Institute, Sydney to honour the "P.ussie".
As well as those originally mentioned, Mr. and Mrs. Hackney, Mr.and Mrs.
R.V.Morgan and Mr.Mczlride attended.
The first officers of the Club were Mr.
R.V.Morgan, President, Mr.A. Fitz-Gibbon (Secretary) and Mrs.J. Edworthy
in the dual role of Publicity Officer and Treasurer.
Plans were made at this inaugural
meeting to hold a Championship Shaw on the 27th January, 1958 (Australia
Day) in the old Cattle Judging Ring at the Sydney Showground. The show
proved to be a great success from start to finish and Ch. Merryvale Blue
Kim owned by Mr.F.
Tweedie bred by Mrs. J.Vignes took out the high award of Best in Show with
Runner-up going to Merryvale Terrence -
a double win as a breeder for Mrs.
Vignes of "Herryvale" Kennels.
The Judge of the day, Mr.L.De Groen,
whilst attending a Club meeting later spoke of the excellence of the
exhibits and prophesied a bright future far the breed and the new Club.
Mr.De Groen judged this same show once again twenty one
years later, which must have been interesting for him to see how
much progress had been made.
