Australian Terrier Club of Qld. History

The Australian Terrier "A" Man made Dog ? YES.

The Australian Terrier Club of Queensland was
founded in July, 1953 and is official affiliated
with the Canine Control Council of Queensland.

Essentially the colonial blue blood, the Australian Terrier has been exhibited in the show ring ever since the late 1800's
Highly intelligent, easily trained, hardy doers
and long lived. The Australian Terrier has the
added advantage of being a small dog requiring
a minimum of cost and care and adapts readily
to either an indoor or outdoor environment.
Tenacious, brave and energetic, the Australian
Terrier craves human companionship, rarely barks without good cause, and makes the ideal pet for children or senior citizen.

So come on all you Aussie owners everywhere,
join the Aussie Club of Queensland, and share a common interest with others genuinely
interested in the welfare of the breed.
Irrespective of whether you intend showing or fostering the breed in the home as a pet.

The Canine Exhibition of 1862 First in Australia
was conducted on November 12 at Mr Moore's
Horse Bazaar in Liverpool Street, Hobart Town, by the newly formed Society for the Improvement in the Breed of Dogs
( changed to the Canine Society in 1883 ).
Breeds exhibited were Setters, Pointers, Spaniels, and other field dogs, Greyhounds,
Harriers, Beagles, and Retrievers, Bulldogs, Bull Terriers, ROUGH TERRIERS, SMOOTH TERRIERS,
Fox Terriers, Newfoundland's and Sheepdogs,
( Black and Tan Sheepdogs, Esquimaux Poodle,
Poodle and a Smithfield Colley ).Thus reported the Hobart Mercury on the first show held in
AUSTRALIA. The second documented dog show,
and the first on the mainland, was in Melbourne
in April, 1864.

Capt. Alan Macdonald was one of the Pioneers,
he took six of these Skye Terriers with him to Hobart in 1848 when posted there with his regiment.
Only one returned to Skye with him.
These are surely among the ancestors of the modern Silky and Australian Terriers.

The Australian Terrier is a man made dog of more
recent years.
It is thought that the Australian Terrier and the
Australian Silky Terrier shared a common parentage, being bred from the crossing of the
Skye Terrier, the Dandie Dinmont and the Scottish Terriers.
From the Skye came the coat. The Skottie gave the head and conformation. The Dandie provided the silky top knot and it is possible the Yorkshire Terrier was used now and then to improve the
colour in the Australian Terrier. The Silky and the
Aussie at some time went their own ways, the Silky bred down in size as it was shown in the
Toy group, and the Ausie bred tough and terrier - like as we know him today.
